History

While working on Stras Memorial Church, Mr. Dennis had succeeded in forming Christ Church in Pocahontas in 1884. A church edifice almost identical to Stras Memorial's was built in a riverside setting near the main entrance to the famed Pocahontas mine, now the Exhibition Mine. It was first used at about the same time as its counterpart in Tazewell.

Mr. Dennis had, by then, moved from Pulaski to Tazewell County with residence in Pocahontas. He transferred to Alabama and by late 1888, was succeeded by the Rev. Charles Gauss, who was named Deacon in Charge of the two Tazewell County churches with his residence in Pocahontas.

In 1889, Mr. Gauss' successor was titled Deacon of Tazewell Parish and took residence in Tazewell to serve both churches.

In the 1920s, Christ Church and its adjacent log residence were dismantled and moved to their present site. In the process, the church itself was rebuilt to about half its original size. The leftover materials were sent to help build All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton. This action reflected the missionary spirit of the Rev. E. W. Hughes, then stationed at Pocahontas as Curate and assigned as medical missionary to congregations in the coal field communities.

Christ Church has been designated a Mission by the Bishop.
