St. Mary's Episcopal Church Bluefield, VA - May 2006

History

St. Mary's Church was built in 1910 under direction of the Rev. Curtis Fletcher, who served Stras from 1904-1911. The beautiful church and rectory are built of sand stone from the Walter Sudduth Quarry, Falls Mills. Its pulpit, dated 1872, was given to St. Mary's by the R. E. Lee Memorial Church in Lexington, Va. when St. Mary's was built. From this pulpit in Lexington, Robert E. Lee, a lay reader, delivered many sermons.

First served by clergy from Tazewell and Pocahontas, St. Mary's later grew to parish status and Christ Church, Pocahontas, was designated its Mission. Until recently, St. Mary's supported its own Rector.
